What should I do if I hear the fire alarm?
If you hear the fire alarm, immediately exit the building by the nearest stairs. Close but do not lock doors. In rental units, a diagram of your exit route is posted on the back of the unit door. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE ELEVATORS IF THE FIRE ALARM SOUNDS. The emergency doors located on each floor close automatically when the fire alarm is set off. Owners may pass through these doors to access the stairwells. However, the doors must not be propped open as they suppress the movement of air, smoke and fire. If the hallways are blocked, go to your porch or nearest window and await instructions.
What should I do if I have set off the smoke alarm in my unit?
Every summer we have an occasional smoke alarm sounding in the building because of burned toast or frying bacon, fish, etc. When cooking these items first turn on the vent hood exhaust fan. If your smoke alarm sounds:
- Turn off the heat source and move the skillet to a cool burner.
- Next turn on the vent hood exhaust fan if you have not already done so, and open your balcony door and windows — DO NOT OPEN YOUR UNIT DOOR TO THE HALLWAY.  The alarm you are hearing initially is only sounding in your unit, but if the smoke gets into the hallway it may set off the building alarm which will automatically summon the fire department.
- Once the smoke is cleared from your unit the alarm can be turn off by someone authorized to do so.

IF THERE IS AN ACTUAL FIRE with flames you should:
- Try to smother the flames either with a skillet lid, a non-flammable cloth, baking soda, or use a fire extinguisher – DO NOT THROW WATER ON THE FIRE, AND DO NOT OPEN THE BALCONY DOOR OR WINDOWS UNLESS AND UNTIL THE FLAMES ARE COMPLETELY OUT.
- IF YOU CANNOT EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES BE SURE THE BALCONY DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE CLOSED if you can safely do so, AND
- LEAVE THE UNIT AT ONCE CLOSING THE DOOR BEHIND YOU AND EXIT THE BUILDING.
